Cleopatra: Gal Gadot Whitewashing Controversy │ News Update ( The Cine Wizard )

Gal Gadot found herself in a controversy regarding her upcoming film Cleopatra. Directed by Kari Skogland, this historical film stars Gal Gadot in the titular role of Cleopatra, the famous queen of Egypt. When the film was announced in December 2020, it stirred up controversy since Gal Gadot is an Israeli actress who will play the role of the Egyptian queen. Many people called this decision, whitewashing which is somehow not accurate. Hollywood has a long history of casting white actors in non-white roles which is a symptom of institutional racism that persists to this day. The same happened in this case and people called it a recent example of whitewashing when Gal was cast to portray Cleopatra. These people suggested that a middle-eastern actress would be suitable for this role. But if we see historical records, it is clear that Cleopatra was a Greek woman of white Macedonian ancestry. So technically, Gal’s casting is not whitewashing but just a harmful misunderstanding. The film is scheduled to be released at the end of 2023.
