While we’re yet to see a trailer, Ryan Reynolds shared an update on his YouTube channel. In late September 2022, he took to social media to announce the release date of Deadpool 3. In a surprising twist, he also revealed that Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine for the sequel.
The journey of making a third Deadpool film began at 20th Century Fox back in November 2016 but was put on hold when Disney acquired the company in March 2019. The rights to the character then shifted to Marvel Studios, who began work on a new film with Ryan Reynolds. This film will connect Deadpool with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and will maintain the R-rating seen in the previous Deadpool movies, making it the first MCU film with such a rating.
Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin joined in November 2020 to write the script, with Reese and Wernick returning to rewrite it by March 2022. Director Shawn Levy came on board, and additional casting occurred in early 2023. Filming started in May in London and Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, with plans for additional shooting in Norfolk and Vancouver, Canada. However, filming was temporarily halted in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
Deadpool 3 is now officially a Marvel Studios production, confirmed by Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios. While it’s likely that the film will mostly take place in the MCU, similar to how the Multiverse Saga brought in characters from other Spider-Man films, specific plot details are currently unknown. Both former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have assured fans that the film will retain its R-rating, allowing for intense action and language.
Ryan Reynolds is set to reprise his role as Deadpool, making his debut in the MCU. The most exciting casting news is the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, a surprise for many fans. Other familiar faces from the previous Deadpool films include Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapičić, Shioli Kutsuna, and Rob Delaney. Emma Corrin will take on a leading villain role, and Matthew Macfadyen’s role remains a mystery.
Deadpool 3 is now confirmed to hit theaters on May 3, 2024. However, given the production halt due to the strike, there could still be further delays in both the release date and the arrival of a trailer for Deadpool 3.
